The example of lettuce shows that up to 11 times higher yields can be achieved with hydroponics than with conventional cultivation, but on the other hand up to 82 times more energy has to be used. However, this high energy demand can be covered cost-effectively with solar modules.
Three quarters of the energy required for greenhouses operated with hydroponic systems consists of heating and cooling loads, followed by energy for lighting and circulation pumps.
Hydroponically produced products require only 20% of the space needed in conventional cultivation because the roots can be supplied directly with nutrients. Vertical cultivation is also conceivable. Through a floor-like installed production, “vertical farming” allows to increase the yield per unit area even more.

SOLAR ENERGY - ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES
Solar energy, which reaches the earth's surface in the form of light and heat,
can be used to generate electricity and heat. However, like any technology, solar energy has advantages and disadvantages. The advantages include the endless availability of the sun as a source of energy and the rapid return on the investment of solar systems. Disadvantages include the weather-dependent intensity of the solar energy and the one-off purchase costs of the systems.
WHAT IS SOLAR ENERGY AND HOW IS IT USED?
Solar energy, or solar power, is energy that is used as heat from solar radiation.
. Photovoltaic modules, also called PV modules or solar panels, convert solar radiation into electricity. It is called solar electricity. Thermal solar collectors absorb the solar radiation and transfer the heat to a water circuit. This solar heat can be used to generate hot water, for heating, but also for process heat and cooling.
WHAT IS A SOLAR CELL?
A solar cell is a very thin disc made of the material silicon. Contact strips are attached
to the front and back of the cell to dissipate the electricity generated by the sunlight in the cell. The silicon is extracted from quartz sand.
WHAT DOES THE POWER RATING "WP" MEAN?
Wp stands for Watt peak. This is a unit that has become established in photovoltaics.
It indicates the power that a module achieves under full solar irradiation and other specified conditions.
WHAT ABOUT CLOUDY SKIES?
Photovoltaic modules not only use the direct sunlight that occurs when the sky is clear,
but also the so-called diffuse radiation from the clouds. The brighter it is outside, the more power the modules produce, regardless of whether the sun is directly visible or not. In our latitudes, diffuse radiation accounts for a good 50 percent of the irradiation.
HOW RELIABLE IS SOLAR ENERGY?
Photovoltaics are mature and reliable. Solar systems function
for at least 25 years and require little maintenance. This is shown by the experience of millions of systems worldwide.
WHERE CAN SOLAR POWER SYSTEMS BE INSTALLED?
Any roof surface that is not shaded all year round
and does not deviate more than 45° from the south is particularly suitable for solar power
WILL THE FIRE RISK FOR MY HOUSE INCREASE IF I INSTALLE A PV SYSTEM?
No. However, the installation of live systems always requires professional installation.
Proper laying and fastening of cables as well as the use of high-quality and approved plug connections are important.
